ST GEORGE MONASTERY

Monastery of Saint George is located on the slopes of Kozjak Mountain and in the vast Pcinja River valley. The original Church is sitting in the inconspicuous village of Staro Nagoričane. It was built by the Byzantine Emperor Roman IV Diogenes in 1071. As one of his many endowments, Serbian King Milutin restored the Nagoricane church thoroughly in 1313 after the great victory against the Ottoman Turks. The special feature of the church are the main icons that were done in a specific al fresco technique directly on the mortar which makes this church the unique one amongst the Serbian shrines. The original frescoes are considered the most beautiful in the so-called “Vardar style”. Bulgarian emperor Mihajlo III Šišman (1322-1330) was buried in the church.
