We explored some remains of Hoxha’s program of “bunkerisation”, which resulted in the construction of bunkers in every corner of Albania. Hundreds of thousands of concrete bunkers (built 1960 to 1983) still crowd Albania long after the fall of Communism. Later we arrived at the ruins of the ancient Illyrian city of Apollonia, which sits on a remote hilltop location near Fier. It’s definitely one of Albania’s most important ancient sites with an excellent museum. We did an evening walk around the site (after the closing hour) under the stars and we really enjoyed to be there alone, it had some mystical atmosphere.
