We have booked in advance our private tour to Chernobyl (3354 UAH / person), at the checkpoint “Dytyatki” we met our guide and started 9 hours exploration of the highly radioactive site of the worst nuclear accident in history (25.04.1986). The disaster took place near the city of Chernobyl in the former USSR, which invested heavily in nuclear power after World War II. Starting in 1977, Soviet scientists installed four RBMK nuclear reactors at the power plant, which is located just south of what is now Ukraine’s border with Belarus. The disaster was the product of a flawed Soviet reactor design coupled with serious mistakes made by the plant operators. Shrouded in secrecy, the incident was a watershed moment in both the Cold War and the history of nuclear power. More than 30 years on, scientists estimate the zone around the former plant will not be habitable for up to 20,000 years. During our tour we have made the visit of the abandoned villages of Zalissja and Kopachi; the Chernobyl NPP and the Sarcophagus; the decontaminated Red Forest, located on the trace of the worst – first – release of the radiation directly after the explosion; the abandoned city of Pripyat, which once had 50-thousand population; the secret soviet object Chernobyl-2 (radar “DUGA-1”); the town of Chornobyl, with the world’s best monument to the heroes of Chernobyl, and an open-air exhibition of vehicles which participated in mitigation of the accident and monument to Chernobyl heroes. At the end of the day, when exiting both zones at the 10 km checkpoint and at the 30 km checkpoint, we made it successfully through the radiation ☢️ screening 😊.
