Telavi, the largest town in Kakheti, is a popular base for exploring the region’s viticultural, historical and architectural riches. It is set in the vineyard-strewn Alazani valley, between the Gombori Mountains and the Great Caucasus. We have parked next to the Batonistsikhe castle, the residence of the Kakhetian kings in the 17th and 18th centuries, which remains a superbly preserved old castle right in the middle of Telavi. The complex includes a renovated Persian-style palace where Erekle II was born and died, two small churches, royal baths, and a state-of-the-art combined history and art museum. In the evening, you can go to Hofbrau Telavi with fine cuisine (Mushroom soup – 6,95 GEL, Veal soup – 8,50 GEL, Pork barbecue – 15,50 GEL, Roasted potatoes – 7,90 GEL, Water – 3 GEL / 0,5 l, Beer – 9,95 GEL / 0,5 l). For morning coffee, go to Café Gisheri.
