We made a short stop at Al Wakrah’s enormous and enchanting souq. It is a maze of alleyways and courtyards, full of renovated clay structures, traditional architecture, a mosque, and stables. Some shops sell everything from honey, spices, and dates to perfumes and souvenirs. It’s easy to spend an evening wandering the alleys, soaking up the atmosphere, but do not expect a traditional market like Souq Waqif in Doha. It’s somehow more artificial here, and the feeling is not so authentic. The seafront promenade beside the souq has restaurants and a bit expensive cafes.
