Relaxed and well-manicured Musanze is the gateway town for Volcanoes National Park and a popular base for those here to explore the region. Sitting at the foot of the Virungas, its magnificent volcano
backdrop entices the adventurous. Some quality restaurants like Silverbacks Cafe or Migano ensure a comfortable stay. We found good gated parking at the Total (with a friendly manager) within walking distance of all the city highlights.
Because of its rates, we skipped a visit to the Volcanoes National Park with 12 habituated gorilla groups. We wanted to visit Musanze Caves, but they have been closed since January for some ongoing research. So we just made a short visit to the poorly managed Genocide Museum, and later, we bought a few chocolates from the local Caractere Chocolate manufacturer.
We took a local taxi to the Red Rocks at Nkotsi Village and were pretty shocked; we had no idea why this project was listed by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as one of the ‘Best Tourism Villages’ in 2021. It offers a range of traditional Rwandan activities for a high fee, anything from making banana beer to workshops on African drumming, basket weaving, and pottery.
