AKAGERA NP

Situated along the border with Tanzania in the countryโ€™s northeast, Akagera is one of East Africaโ€™s most scenic parks and features a stunning diversity of landscapes, ranging from open savannah and forested woodlands to a vast network of lakes and wetlands. Not to mention Rwandaโ€™s other magnificent wildlife, including lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, giraffe, and hippo.

Founded in 1934, Akagera is one of Africaโ€™s oldest national parks. And though hard hit by poaching in the 1980s, civil war, and genocide in the 1990s, this once-flourishing national park has made nothing short of a miraculous comeback and is lauded as one of the great conservation success stories of the 21st century.

We made a full-day game drive and covered more than half of the park. A local driver with a pick-up truck cost us 100 USD. The entrance was another 100 USD per person + 21 USD for our car and driver and 40 USD for the local navigator/guide. From our point of view, it was the best park we ever visited in East Africa (value for money), with plenty of wild animals and fantastic views.
