LIEPĀJA

We made overnight on Latvia’s ruggedly beautiful west coast in the third biggest city of Latvia. Liepāja is a port city with pristine beach and architecture ranging from elegant timber houses to Art Nouveau masterpieces and grand old warehouses turned into luxury hotels. It has a nice market offering fresh fruits and vegetables together with local specialties. We liked the city spirit which reflects its nickname “the city where the wind is born”. We have parked just around the corner from the famous stylish Fontaine Palace Club (beer 3,70 € / 0,5 l). Just 4 kilometers from the town is Karosta – the giant military port which served czars and Soviet Army. There we went to Karosta Prison – the ominous brick building originally built as an infirmary in 1900. It was used as a military prison by a long succession of regimes including the Soviets, Nazis, and most recently, the Latvians.
