ISIBANIA BORDER

After refilling our water tank and refueling diesel at Total (3179 TZS / liter) in Mwanza, it took us five hours to travel on a good tarmac road to reach the Isibania Border situated in Northern Tanzania. It is the usual crossing point between the Masai Mara National Park and the Serengeti National Park. The main post is located on the right side in Kenya. A few fixers approached us, but we friendly ignored them. After completing our health registration and verifying our Yellow Fever Card, we proceeded directly to the main hall to obtain an exit stamp from Tanzania and an arrival stamp from Kenya. We had made our ETA online a week prior for a fee of $31.05. Then we got stamped our CPD by Tanzanian customs and Kenyan customs. There, we were supposed to pay a mandatory 40 USD / 5,160 KES for a 30-day road tax. They said it had to be paid at the bank (which was already closed), then they insisted on paying it via M-PESA (a few fixers were ready to do it for a fee). However, in the end, we persuaded the officer to accept a cash payment without any additional fees. Then we returned to the truck, followed by a few plainclothes customs officers who showed up. After some friendly chat and a tip of 300 KES, we left the place through the gate.

Just a hundred meters from the gate, we stopped at the Safaricom shop to purchase an internet package (1000 KES / 30 days / 7 GB) and then drove towards Nairobi. It was already late, so we tried to stop at several places for the night, but they did not want us there, or they tried to charge us exorbitant fees, such as $ 100. In the end, deep in the night around 3 AM, we stopped on the side of the road in front of a Shell Gas Station in Maai Mahiu.
