Situated along the border with Tanzania in the countryโs northeast, Akagera is one of East Africaโs most scenic parks and features a stunning diversity of landscapes, ranging from open savannah and forested woodlands to a vast network of lakes and wetlands. Not to mention Rwandaโs other magnificent wildlife, including lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, giraffe, and hippo.
Founded in 1934, Akagera is one of Africaโs oldest national parks. And though hard hit by poaching in the 1980s, civil war, and genocide in the 1990s, this once-flourishing national park has made nothing short of a miraculous comeback and is lauded as one of the great conservation success stories of the 21st century.
We made a full-day game drive and covered more than half of the park. A local driver with a pick-up truck cost us 100 USD. The entrance was another 100 USD per person + 21 USD for our car and driver and 40 USD for the local navigator/guide. From our point of view, it was the best park we ever visited in East Africa (value for money), with plenty of wild animals and fantastic views.
