We spent a night in the valley of the Vararak River in the town of Goris. The main attraction are the cave shelters of Old Goris carved into the hillside on the east side of town. They were probably built and inhabited in the 5th century. Several trails lead up over a saddle with epic views over Goris and volcanic pinnacle clusters similar to the ‘fairy chimneys’ in Turkey. Nowadays, some caves are used to house cattle or as churches. We used second time already the application HikeArmenia to navigate us on our 1½-hour easy hike. And again, it helped us to find the correct footpath.
