Very late afternoon we missed the highway exit, so we walked 45 minutes back to visit one of Bulgaria’s oldest towns; it has as its centerpiece the magnificent restored Tsarevets Fortress, the citadel of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Historic Târnovo is tucked into the dramatic bends of the Yantra River, clasped by an amphitheater of forested hills.
