GOLIJA MOUNTAINS (Голија)

We left Studenica Monastery in rainy and foggy weather, we drove (105 km / 3 hours) through serpentines of the Route 30 and 21 via Golija Mountains through Ivanjica town to Sjenica. The mountain is part of the Dinaric Mountain range and is heavily forested with significant biodiversity, that’s why part of it is the Golija-Studenica Biosphere Reserve listed in UNESCO. The weather was really bad and we drove slowly passing wooden charcoal manufactures. Finally, In the evening we arrived in the small sleepy town Sjenica located on the Pešter plateau and surrounded by the mountains of Jadovnik, Ozren, Giljeva, and Javor. It is an old town, first mentioned in 1253 AD as a place where many merchants rested and paid taxes while on their way to Dubrovnik. So, also we took our rest here before going to the Uvac Canyon.
